The Official Motorcycle Thread!

Motorcycles are one of my biggest passions... currently have a 2018 Yamaha R1 and a 2017 Ducati Multistrada. This is after deciding that all my older bikes had to go as I was getting tired of spending more time wrenching on them than riding them. Some of my past bikes were: 2000 R1, 2006 KTM 625 Supermoto, 2008 Suzuki DRZ 400 Supermoto, Honda CRF250x (stolen), Honda GB500, Yamaha SRX6, 1984 Honda NIghthawk 700S, and a few others.

Thread has been quiet for awhile.....

Since it's the "OFFICIAL" motorcycle thread, thought I would ask a question about replacement tires:

Do most but and get them replaced at the dealer?

buy online? what sites are good?
And if buying online which shop or dealer do you have do the mount and balance?


Anybody try this shop?

I do the dealer route...mostly because my local dealer installs for free if you buy from them. I know other people do it themselves, or buy the tire and then pay to have it mounted. Thats honestly just a hassle.

I’ve dealt with MTC in the past. No complaints.

Dennis Kirk has good pricing and free shipping. Dealt with them a lot when I lived there.
 
You didn't specify the bike or the goal.

I'm the CHEAP SON OF A BIOTCH, so I squeeze a penny till it cry's.
I mount my own. Street & dirt.
I buy them from ROCKY MOUNTAIN ATV.
I'd rather spend a few bucks on tools and have them for life than pay a dealer to scratch my rims.
There's more than enough info on YOUTUBE for anyone to learn.

Well.....

I'd heard good things about that shop, too. I bought tires for my Buell online (I don't remember where) and took them to that shop for the installation. Two days later, my rear wheel bearing fell apart. I noticed it by accident after stopping at a friend's house for dinner. Left the bike there until I could fix it in his yard a few days later. Did some research and found out that the Buell bearing is notorious for failing shortly after someone WHO DOESN'T KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING does the rear tire. So, um, there's something to be said for a specialist if you don't have something normal.

My guess is that most take the wheels off and bring them to the dealer to replace and balance a new tire. That is what I do.

You can usually buy the tires cheaper on-line, but then the shops usually charge you more to mount them if you didn't buy the tire there. Many shops in the past would mount the tire for free if you purchased the tire from them.

But lately, I have noticed getting a tire changed anywhere has been a rip off. Just a couple of weeks ago, on Oct 8, in Reno, I had the rear tire replaced on my 2016 Moto-Guzzi Stelvio. It cost me $330.98 for the one new rear tire mounted on the wheel.

Tire= $263.95
labor= $41.40
supplies $2.48
tax= $23.15
total= $330.98

It was that way about a year ago or more. Have you had a tire changed lately that you have purchased at the shop?

During this year, I have had six motorcycle tires replaced at three different shops, two shops here in CA, one in Reno. I purchased ALL the tires from the same shop as did the work and every one of them charged me labor--and I brought the wheels in. And I normally bring the wheels to a shop that services the same bike to avoid possible issues with the shop being unfamiliar with the bike.

The shops were:

Oak Grove Motorsports (Oak Grove, CA)-Zero SR front tire.

A&S Motorcycles, (RoseVille, CA) Both tires on a 2013 Triumph Trophy SE.

Euro Cycles in Reno (both tires on a 2017 Zero DS and a rear tire on a 2017 Moto Guzzi Stelvio.

I can still remember buying a Snell certified Shoei helmet from Dennis Kirk in the late 80's - didn't even have a credit card so I gave a friend cash and called in the order with his card, lol. I put the Dennis Kirk sticker they gave me on my helmet which is why I remember it.


Did MTC have any problem with you bringing in tires you bought online?

How much did they charge to mount and balance?

Did you take the wheels off your bike and take them in, or were they able to take the wheels off of your bike and handle it all?

Pretty hardcore setup there Terdog!

Unfortunately my garage is already packed to the gills - I literally have shelves on every wall, and ceiling 5 ceiling racks hanging from every open ceiling spot (each rack is 4"x8")

Ive always done the mounting myself. Its been a few years since I bought anything from MTC. Just mentioned them for the local convenience.

If you don’t mind doing it yourself I say DK is your best bet.
 
For those in Northern Nevada you can use cycle gear and they give you a better price on Mount and balance if you buy the tires from them. Also, there is a shop in Gardnerville called Testa that usually gives decent deals and mounts for free.
 
I feel that Rocky Mountain is better than Dennis Kirk. Their shipping time is really quick if they have it in their Utah location. Usually 2 days to Northern Nevada. They also give you cashback on every purchase towards your next purchase

Since I don't have the space or tools to take off my wheels, and Mac's story gave me pause about that shop I linked, I may have to go to the dealer. Will do some more research, tires aren't that bad yet.


Did a search to see if there were any forums similar to this one that were for Nevada motorcycle riders, and mostly only found dead forums, with years old cob web posts. Kind of sad really when you see what looks like a nice forum and realize there have only been a handful of posts in the last few years.....

Anybody here know any local motorcycle forums or groups?

Most of that starts with the type of bike. Find any forum that supports your bikes and then see if it has a section for events and rides and such.

There are local busy forums for all bikes in some very populated areas, such as the BARF (Bay Area Rider's Forum), but I know of no such forum for NV. I know that Las Vegas has a few forums, such as this one, but I know nothing about those as I am not a member of any of those.

That one u linked is one I found that was like a ghost town.

I think the last post in the entire forum was in June of this year, and in the various sub areas most of the last posts were 3-5 YEARS ago.....

BTW, one problem has been many forums have moved to FaceBook in the last few years. So if you're a FB user (I almost never use FB) you probably want to check that out.

That was true with the older bikes. With the newer bikes, none of mine have the tools for the wheel removal.

With my old 1971 BMW, I could almost take the entire bike apart with its tools. It even came with a tire pump under the seat. The tool kits are getting more and more mickey mouse. Some new bikes (and all electric bikes, AFAIK) don't even come with a tool kit.

And it's not just motorcycles.

Buy a new Tesla and you will not even get a spare tire!

I have nothing newer than 2015 (FZ1), but comes with all the tools needed for both wheels to be pulled.
My experience is that it really doesn't take much in the way of tools to pull mc wheels, which is why I asked what bike.
