My little boys 6th birthday is coming up at the end of the month and I feel that it's time to start him down the path of firearm safety and I think that a nice rifle would be good.

These things aren't expensive in the least! but I want to see if someone had one laying around that their kid(s) grew out of.

I'd get a small bolt action like the papoose or cricket.

Single shot, short length of pull, easy to shoot and dad will love it also.
 
Just got a Savage Rascal for my niece for her 6th bday.
She loves it and by loves it I mean she has told me several times that she doesn't like it and doesn't want it, but she hasn't shot it yet.

They had a $50? rebate from Oct-Dec. I picked it up the end of Sept...

That’s what I was thinking of grabbing or obviously something along the same lines as that. I think bolt is best for learning.

She’ll like it once she tries it haha. I’ll check out if they have any rebates still. That would make it an even better price.
 
I'm along the lines of single shot rifle is the best to learn on for kids. Teaches them to concentrate more on taking a good shot.
 
My choice would be to get the budget priced Ruger 10/22 carbine and a couple of the Ruger 1 (ONE) round magazines that they offer. As the progress, you can just get the other magazines...
 
I went through a search a few years ago. I decided on the Savage Rascal. The functional components are the same as a normal bolt action in the terms of the safety, trigger and bolt action.

The Cricket has that pull knob behind the bolt which I guess is used as an added safety. Didn't like that as I wanted to teach transferable egos and function.
 
If you do go with a 10/22 I’d strongly suggest a youth stock. I started my son on a full sized one and the LOP was too long for him. A drop in child’s wood stock made things a lot better.
 
I have a Rossi rifle that is a youth rifle/shotgun. It is a single shot rifle that has interchange 22lr and 410 shotgun barrels. Two gun calibers for the price of one. Let me know if you are interested. I am located in northwest LV.
