Your best bet might be Amazon for the Baofeng UV5 variants.

They run around $35 and are a great starter HT. I've had one for several years.

Completely agree - I started with a Baofeng, and buying those new makes most sense. Beware, though - Baofangs are the crack of ham radio. Your gun money will start getting diverted towards radio money.

There was a guy at a Provident Living fair I went to two weeks ago, selling the Baofeng BF-F8HP 8w ham radio for $50 brand new in the box. He local, no tax, just helping folks out. Retired Navy guy I think. If you're interested, shoot me a PM and I'll get you his contact info.

Some time back I wrote a quick programming guide for this Bao Feng UV5R, it's not that difficult to do once you figure it out, and out in the field you won't have that laptop ,cable and software with you to quickly add in a new simplex frequency or repeater pair.

If someone wants a copy of it just shoot me a PM with the e mail address you want it sent to.

It's always best to learn how to program any HAM radio manually first, so you can do it in an emergency when no computer is handy, and also so that you can figure out what's wrong when the programming software screws up something, usually caused by a typo when entering the frequencies or offset.
