Browning Pedigree, FN Attitude

FN FNAR Tactical in .308 Winchester.

Despite the tactical furniture, intimidating appearance, and enough black plastic to depress a goth teenager, her family tree leads straight back to the civilian Browning BAR sporting rifle. FN took that proven gas-operated hunting rifle design, dressed it for a tactical convention, gave it detachable box magazines, and introduced the FNAR in 2008.

The result was a rather interesting rifle with an excellent reputation for accuracy. FN advertised a factory accuracy standard of one MOA or better with suitable ammunition. The best I did with my match loads was a depressing 1.5 MOA.

She wears the ever-fashionable tactical black. Not midnight black, charcoal black, or some exotic shade. Just black. FN spent the entire color-development budget on engineering.

She's currently equipped with an Athlon Helos BTR 8–34×56 scope, which provides enough magnification and resolution to examine the target's personal shortcomings from a considerable distance, and the first-focal plane reticle to hold the proper wind call based on the direction their nose hairs are blowing. The Helos is Athlon's premium scope with much nicer adjustments. There's also an additional 20-round magazine.

The FNAR is an interesting combination of Browning sporting-rifle heritage, Belgian FN engineering, and modern tactical styling. It's also a reminder that an accurate, interesting .308 battle rifle doesn't necessarily need SCAR money.
