I'm ignorant when it comes to these rifles so I'm thinking of buying one to learn more about them... not looking for the sporterized version, I want the plain jane surplus but not beat to hell either... how much do they run these days?

Thanks!
Mike

Are you looking for an Enfield or a 8mm Mauser ? Or one of each ?

Prices on both have gone up considerably in the last few years.

Even beater rifles of both types go for quite a bit more than in years past.

In recent months I have seen beater Enfields selling for $400-450, and up to $700 for a pristine like new example.

Mausers are a lot harder to quantify, as there is a wider price range, based on type, year, country of origin, condition, markings, etc.
If you are just looking for a good quality/ condition shooter then I recommend looking for a Yugo M48. With a bit of luck you may find one in the $400-450 range (just 2-3 years ago I found one for $300 still in Cosmolene, but I was lucky).

J&G Sales has some, but they ain't cheap like they used to be. And no more $100 cases of Yugo 8mm ball ammo, its now $380 a case of 900.

You should be able to get a Turk M38 Mauser in 7.92 (8mm) fairly cheap still.
