This is a 1986 manufactured M1A. These early M1A's were machined by Valley Ordnance Co. and had hand sanding and polishing done to most receiver surfaces by Melvin Smith. These are considered the finest finished M1A's made. About serial number 38,000 Springfield Armory obtained some new M-14 parts kits and although I am not an M1A/M-14 expert, all the parts I can identify on this rifle are Winchester. (OM=Winchester parent Olin-Matheson, 66118= CAGE Code for Winchester) Chrome lined barrel, op-rod, bolt, hammer, trigger group all marked either Winchester or "OM" for Olin Matheson.
I have owned it for over 20 years as second owner, it had been fired very little when I purchased it from a friend and I have not fired more than 100 rounds in over 20 years. Comes with a walnut stock, early vented GI handguard, a new GI non-vented handguard, an ultra-rare S.A. Woodland Camo stock (GI fiberglas) that was available in the 80's with matching camo handguard, leather sling, NOS proper cotton web GI sling, cleaning kit with tool, S.A. scope mount, a SA 5-rd mag, a SA 10-rd mag and 20 GI mags ($400 value?). I clear-coated the camo with flat polyurethane. The magazines are: OM (Winchester) 4, UHC 1, BRW 2, CMI 3, KMT 2, 1971 CMI in the wrap 4, plain zink parkerizing (assume Polytech or Norinco but very good!) 4. Gas block has been shimmed so the gas cylinder lock tightens up exactly at 6:00...see last photo, otherwise it is unmolested. Take it all before Jan 2d for $2,000 and I will throw in 380 rounds of Malaysian 7.62 NATO and 40 rounds of Norma .308.
