I just got a hard top for my TJ, and I'm looking at freshening it up. I've never painted, but I was considering buying/renting the tools and learning. Conversely, if I could find a person/shop that would spray it for not too much, I could go that way. I'll do the prep however directed, so I just need it sprayed. It's off the vehicle now and I'm gonna start cleaning it up and looking at the seals and rear glass hinges.

Any advice or recommendations?

One of the textured coatings that go on thick and hide any imperfection..it looks really good, imo.

That's an option I'd forgotten about. I'm thinking more a custom color.

I miss that jeep....

But at some point I'll get an FJ

Before and after pics would be appreciated.

My future Bronco is driving around somewhere around here in NV or AZ.

BTW, TJ hard tops out here are 1600 or more for some damned reason. Got mine in Chicago for $650 as I was visiting family.

Have you read the story of the guy in Canada who painted his 69 Charger in Rustolium/Tremclad with a foam roller?IMG_6754.jpeg

As others have stated one of those bedliner products (rhinoliner, liner, monster liner, lizard skin, etc.) in the color you want would be ideal. A friend recently had his done with this stuff, it wasn’t cheap but it easily hid previous damage to the hardtop & offered more protection and strength. The downside is it is expensive (almost the cost of a hard top) and weighs a lot, he said it was completely worth it and would do it again in a heartbeat.

Custom / matching colors are cool, but IMHO I would go for function over form.. if you live in Southern NV you may want to consider getting the lightest color possible to ward off some of the heat. Another interesting option would be to consider putting some insulating / noise dampening on the inside of the top if you are going to be turning the TJ into a daily driver.

All good advice, thank you. There is an aftermarket top maker down by San Diego that does a type of flocking to the inside of their tops. That is intriguing, and I may pursue something like that for the inside. Jeep is Stone White, so a matching top would be like stock, and cool. One idea I have is to use Vegas Golden Knights colors to make it a bit unique. If I can't find someone to spray it cheap I may explore Harbor Freight equipment.
