NO MORE FREE Amateur Radio Exams in Pahrump, NV

The Nye County Emergency Communications Group, call sign W7NYE, is NO LONGER offering FREE amateur radio exams for all three classes of license, Technician, General and Extra, on the third (3rd) Saturday of each month at 1300 hours (1 PM) at the Nye County Emergency Operations Center (the EOC), located at 1510 East Siri Lane, Pahrump, NV 89060. In fact we are not offering any radio exams anymore, after too many years of no one showing up or asking to take the exams, plus the cost to us and the software that now fails to load properly for the free exams, we have terminated exams in Pahrump as of 1 October 2025.

I will still supply the free study materials for all classes of license, see below.

You must have a FCC Registration Number (FRN) prior to the exam and provide it in the registration form you will get if you email W7NYE@Yahoo.com to register.
I can walk you through the obtaining the FRN, it's easy and FREE.

The exam is FREE (IF YOU TAKE IT WITH THE LAS VEGAS LAUREL TEST TEAM, but you still have to pay the FCC $35 to get the license once you pass the exam.

Other volunteer Examiner groups charge $15, which they have to pay to the ARRL (American Radio Relay League) to get the ARRL to send the test info on to the FCC.

I am NO LONGER A Lead Volunteer Examiner for the Laurel Volunteer Examiner Coordinators (Laurel VEC Group), LAUREL VE TEAMS don't charge the $15 test fee because THEY have the ability to directly input the exam results and all associated paperwork directly to the FCC.

The result is no fee, and you normally get your license much faster.

There is a Laurel 'VE team in Vegas as well, so you don't have to come to Pahrump for a free exam, I will post their contact info when I get home.
I think their exams are the first Saturday of the month at 0800 hours, all Laurel 'VE exams anywhere in the USA are free, have been since 1984.

These guys are great. I upgraded to General in the last few weeks and they couldn't have made it any easier.

Going from tech to general offers the biggest jump in frequency privileges for a ham.
The move to extra gets you a smidgen more, but not that much, not compared to the upgrade to general.

So far I've built a few end fed antennas (49:1 and 9:1) and made contacts in the opposite hemisphere with just a few watts.
This has been the most fun I've had in the hobby for years.

Learn Morse Code and work the world on even less output power.
One of my brothers builds 1/10 watt radios into Altoids® tins, powered by a 9V battery, goes up on mountain tops, tosses out a long wire cut to the frequency controlled by the crystal in the radio, and an appropriate length of counterpoise wire, and works the world via Morse Code on 1/10 watt.
It's a fun hobby no matter how you approach it, and a very useful skill in emergencies and disasters.
