FOund a pistol I want to buy. Hunting season is right around the corner so selling a 30-06. Its a Remington 700 bolt action in great shape. Only trade I'd be interested in is a hellcat. $375obo

If that date code is "AXR", combined with that serial number that would be a March 1973 manufactured rifle, just FYI.

I have a July 1976 Remington 700 in .30-06 as well, so this is relevant to my interests.

When I decoded it the I went by the "R" which made it 1968. Either way it's not the pre 64 rifle. Ill take the date off the ad.

The first character is the month, which in this case is March (A). The second letter is the year(or second and third in the case of two character year codes). Just FYI. Nice rifle, I like mine.

When I read the description it said "second digit" was year I thought it was the 2nd of the 2 digit year stamp. I like this rifle too, I just have a few 30-06 and really would like to pick up a Hellcat

Well as the chart shows, there is no "XR" year stamp for any year. The few years that do use two characters for the year use a matching pair of characters. So, the R in your case doesn't mean anything relavant to the date.

My 1963 700 (6mm) has a date code of DKX (and a five digit serial number) which Remington even confirmed to me in an email that it was August 1963, with the X having no relevant meaning.
