Been awhile TopHog, but man, you sure haven't changed! lol. Dig the setup, you must have put that one together back when you were in the Boy Scouts! Did the Boy Scouts exist back then? LOL JK HAHAHAHA!

I wouldn't count on the phone lines being up and running if there's a need to bug out. Add a handheld cb/ham radio transceiver THEN you're ready.

While it's not a handheld, the Icom IC-7300 is a GREAT portable ham radio that also is a GREAT general purpose shortwave receiver, which as you can imagine would be needed to find out what is happening in the world. I've got a 12v LiFePo4 40 Amp-hour battery to power it, along with a small solar power charge controller and panels. Just string some wire out to a tree branch for shortwave or carry a rolled up dipole antenna.

Good info, but I also have dueling Yeasus. An FT-7800R and a VX-7R HT. (Just didn't think it fit the motif!) And I didn't include my antique 'Damascus' double barrel percussion shotgun!

And I also have a crappy Radio Shack CB and a pair of Midland FRS/GMRS 2 ways!

But even when cell towers are down, satellites are kaput, and an EMP has ruined most forms of communication, there are still ways to supply talk path on copper lines. My 'butt ins' can be invaluable! :)

I'm also stocking up on wet logs and Carrier pigeons!

When I first got my license long ago, we used to look forward to the annual "Field Day" camp out, setting up our radio stations and antennas in the middle of nowhere, for the purpose of being prepared for any conditions needing communications.

Today, it's all about luxury 'camping' in chic air-conditioned RVs with Beam antennas mounted on the rooftops, along with satellite Directv for downtime entertainment on a big wall mounted flatscreen, using laptops with automatic logging, automatic CQs, etc. to get the trophy for the most contacts.
