Small to Mid Size SUV recommendations

My Honda Passport has been solid for me. It might just be over on budget depending on the trim you pick but it has a proven and reliable drivetrain.

So for the last two-ish years i have been test driving different vehicles. I settled on the Mazda Cx-30 and Cx-50 at the time the CX-50 was a first year model car and the transmission was a bit clunky still (even though it still uses the same transmission as the cx-5 and cx-30.) I got a 2024 CX-30 AWD for $24k with 7k miles. I love the Mazda cx-30 and the cx-50. If you get a certified pre-owned Mazda (CPO) they have a 7 year or 100kmile factory warranty on powertrain and other stuff from the date the car was manufactured. Mazda's are kinda overlooked yet they are great.

I'd find another late model Tahoe. Less sensors, strong motors, will chew up snow and are going up in value.. 95-99. Not mid sized but gets the job done. Easy to work on and parts are cheap.
This...cheaper parts= lower insurance rates, according to my allstate agent Thats all he drives for this reason.

Maybe I should switch to allstate. State Farm is ridiculous.

I saw a beat to crap rusted out old 1986 VW Westfalia with body dents, cracked vinyl and worn fabric interior, a non functional propane fridge and stovetop that was a 4x4 conversion (somehow?). Had a Subaru motor in it that the “For Sale” signage said had less than 50k miles on it.
Only $20k, what a deal!

Jokes aside, you can probably find an older 5th or 4th Gen Toyota 4Runner that would meet your specs and price and be a great all around city and off road SUV.

I was in search for the grail of the forerunner world, Gen 3, six banger, manual. Those are supposedly the best for the later models. I did find one in Cali but the seller backed out.

Found a 1996 Tahoe instead with 113k and a new motor installed at 35k for a little over 2k.

Sat for quite a bit so changed the fluids and some minor repairs and she's off to the races. Does need paint but the truck will go for another 200k easy.

Still on the hunt for the gen 3 when funds are better but they are only going up in value.
