Default Anyone hike out to the Carole Lombard crash site on Potosi?

Just doing some research on the plane crash there and was wondering if anyone has ever hiked or driven out to the site?

I have always wanted to but never had the time to just do it. I had friend do it a few yrs back and said its pretty good hike, not really for the novice hiker. Its is on my list of to-do's for sure!

I've been up there to the actual crash site. As stated, it is not a hike for beginners. I was there years ago, long before the communications towers were installed. I don't know if one could use the access road now or not. Some might not know the history of this airline crash; Incredibly enough, the Boulder City Airport used to be the main commercial airport in So. Nevada. The field at what became Nellis AFB was used some, but was mainly a military base. The airport that became McCarren was opened. The conclusion by the accident investigation group was that the pilots of this ill-fated flight were used to taking off from BC and somehow used the Boulder City FAA Departure Plate for IFR flight instead of the correct one for the new Las Vegas Airport. By following the wrong departure path, the pilots flew directly into the northern edge of Mt. Potosi. ....... Big Cholla

Yea, I would love to make it up there someday. Maybe hike up and do an overnighter.

Clark Gable offered reward money and paid for a yearly expedition to go up there and try to recover the wedding ring he gave Carole Lombard, apparently her left hand was never recovered.

He was never the same after she died.

Interesting info about the crash site here.

During WWII Carole Lombard raised millions in war bonds to help the troops. A very patriotic lady, like so many stars of her era. They don't make 'em like that any more.

There is more than one wreck up there.

A couple of years ago, a Civil Air Patrol plane went down within about 200 feet of the point of impact of Carol Lombard's plane. The two people on board both lost their lives in that one.

The radio towers up there have both commercial and amateur radio antennas and transmitters on them.

There are at least 4 amateur radio (HAM) repeaters up on that site, that cover the Las Vegas Valley, Pahrump Valley and Sandy Valley.
