Default Awd vs 4wd

We just bought a outback as a compromise vehicle. I really wanted another 4wd SUV or truck. My wife is of small stature and didn't want climb in and out of lifted 4wd. We settled on the Subaru and I am pleasantly surprised with its off-road ability. We are just a family of three and it's fits our needs.

I have 99 explorer 4wd with 3.73 and limited slips front and rear and 31" tires. The Subie for coming to campsites and lake does just as well.

What are everyone's thoughts on 4wd or AWD.

Nice. My brother has one of those. Great ground clearance for a vehicle like that. His is pearl white with the most beautiful tu-tone leather interior. They are built for the snow!

I like Subaru's. When it's time for tires maybe get something more aggressive for better traction.

Slap a set of Maxtrax on the top and take that thing anywhere.

My wife had an AWD Chevy Equinox and that thing was awesome in the snow. You basically couldn't get it to slide around. Modern traction control is awesome.

What kind of gas mileage are you getting?

Los
Peach Springs, Az is the jump off point for the trip to bottom of Grand Canyon. You have to get the permit from the Tribe at the lodge.
If the kids are into the movies cars Seligman offers lots of photo ops.

You are correct about a more aggressive tire. I am going to find another set of Subie wheels and put some 235/65/17 ATs on it. My 5 year old calls her Subie doo.
