Default Need help from one of the welders in the other thread.

I have a 97 VW Golf with a bad crankshaft. One edge of the crankshaft slot that holds the keyway on the harmonic balancer is rounded off. Replacing/removing the crank is not financially possible for me. Heres the picture of what I mean.

My question is can the rounded off portion, red arrow, have weld added to bring it back up to match the same rough shape as the intact portion, blue arrow? If so will it be strong enough to hold?

Side note::The harmonic balancer is a one piece unit of crank gear, the balancer, then a pulley for AC/water pump so there's no room to get behind it and weld it to the crankshaft itself. The gear and keyway shown in the below pic. I've had to resort to buying a used balancer since they run $558 from VW. The one in the 2nd pic lasted less than 10 minutes.

The problem is it will throw off the balance and depending on the metal how strong the weld would be.

Unfortunately I can't. The car wont run without harmonic balancer. And the piece in top pic is in the bottom of the motor.

Ok I'd have to look at it and that means you need a portable welder

possibly. depends on the material of the crankshaft. also would want to make sure the heat doesn't cause other parts to expand and bind up.

maybe have someone tug weld it with the proper rod the use a dremel to match the other side?

I would definitely call a pro for this job though last thing you want is a weld that doesn't penetrate well and breaks off while spinning at 4k Rom.

any welding will destroy the seal, but at this point I think anything done will destroy the seal so it will need to be replaced.
Anything you do can and probably will cause issues. Tig welding would be the best chance at welding it up. Another possibility is to cut out a section squarely and insert a spacer to fill the gap.
