The barrels on the old Winchester's were Nickel steel and were hard to blue the same as the receiver, I have a 1894 Saddle Ring Carbine in 30-30 made a year before yours that looks like it was used as a or and a shovel and a...
I wish my tang looked that nice, some body drilled and tapped it right in the middle for a tang sight and then took it off. Mine only has about 20% of the original bluing left on the receiver and it looks like some body used a nail to scratch their name in the side of the receiver at some point. The barrel looks like 20 miles of bad road inside but it does not shoot too bad, I cant complain I only paid $50 for it 5 years ago. I have thought about refinishing it but I really hate shooting it, it kicks harder then any rifle I have including my .458 Win mag. If some one would trade me a Marlin lever action or some VW parts for it I would do it in a hot second.
I forgot it has a nice yellowing coat of varnish all over it too and the stock is cracked.
