I've been reading things suggesting that I really should have a shotgun at home. Some quote such as, "a pistol is what you use to fight your way to a shotgun" is what has me thinking.
How many of you only have handguns for home SD? |

Hi, Phoebe.
We have both. Different situations require different tools.

Have both, keep the handgun close and shotgun where it can be accessed easily.

Ditto with Tophog
hand gun, shotgun, knife, what ever works, even an aerosol can of something will blind and pause an attacker till you need to get to where ever or what ever.

Had handguns only for a long time, and don't hesitate to rely on them by themselves.
That said, I am buying a Mossberg 930 with the tax money I get back soon and will be getting the field barrel as well as the home defense barrel for it. Probably use my handgun for the "bump in the night" investigations, but will opt for the shotty for confirmed "OMG someone's downstairs". Different tools for different scenarios.

Ditto. All depends whats going down, but like what has been already said, normally handgun is whats picked up first and if you need to bump it up a notch the others are accessable and you have a tool in your hand that will get you to them.

I have either one of my Glocks right next to me, and two Mossberg 500's in the room.
Usually if I hear a noise I grab my Glock first for some reason. But I know if I had to fire a shot or two at someone, my girlfriend would come flying down stairs with her 500 ready to go. |

2 Glocks, a Remington 870, and a pistol grip mossberg 500. Odd noises indoors get investigated with My surefire G2 and a Glock. Odd noises outdoors get investigated with both Glock and 870 w/ G2. If it is blatantly obvious there is someone in the house that doesn't belong, My gf takes her G23 and her Mossy and takes defensible cover in the bedroom and calls the police. The hallway in the house is the most defensible area so I will stage to engage at the far end let them come to me. While we are awake, at least one Glock floats around the house with us and one is always on hand when any stranger comes a knockin'.
One big thing to think about is how cramped your residence is. If you don't have lots of room to move around, then a shotgun may not be a favorable weapon choice as it is hard to move around corners and pie uncleared areas. I would also worry about being potentially disarmed in a struggle with a shotgun. I'm not saying that you couldn't be disarmed in a struggle with your handgun but they are much more maneuverable in the closer quarters. Whatever you use be it baseball bat, handgun, shotgun, ar15, bazooka, or whatever, it is worthless without practice practice practice and this is something I am still working on. |

We have a variety of handguns and my AR. I have been shopping for both a nice hunting rifle and a shotgun though.
