Default Question regarding occasional importation of firearms to the US

I have an opportunity to purchase a rare sporting rifle from an individual in the UK. As I am in the US, I have found that I can import the rifle using the services of a nearby FFL by using ATF form 5330.3A (Application and Permit for Importation of Firearms, Ammunition and Implements of War - cool name, eh?). My question is this - has anyone else done this before, and if, so how did it go? Also, anyone know of an FFL in Northern Nevada who might be happy working with me on this? Thanks.

A regular gun dealer cannot do this legally unless he is also licensed as an Importer of weapons and destructive devices from the BATFE, Which is one of the most expensive licenses to obtain.

You're S.O.L. from local help.

Looking at form 5330.3A, it states that a "Federal firearms licensee, other than an importer, may make an occasional importation of sporting firearms or ammunition (excluding surplus military) for himself or an unlicensed person in the licensee's state, provided that the firearms and ammunition are intended for personal use of the person for whom imported and not for resale".

(Emphasis added by me.)

That sounds like ANY FFL can occasionally import a firearm under certain circumstances. I also know others have done this. I just want to know if anyone in Nevada has done this, and what their experiences were.

Oh, well, forget it. I got my answer from several FFLs today. Although it can be done, and the protocols are in place to allow it to happen, no one wants to touch this with a barge pole.

Ok, I will try this again - anyone know of any FFLs in northern Nevada who will deal with "occasional importation" of firearms. I have checked, and double-checked, with the ATF to make sure this is totally legal. It is pretty easy paperwork and easy money for the FFL, from what I have been able to ascertain.

Thanks for that

One of the places you mentioned has 2 of the same rifles I am after in their shop (who'd have guessed???), so I am looking into them right now - not having to import would be a weight off of my shoulders lol
