Sorry, range time yes. Ammo no, but I think I had 50-60 rounds laying around at the time.

The question is still up if anyone wants to get a group together for a class with one of the sponsors.

I am adding things up here Duck and if the class cost around $80 and ammo for two guns runs around $30, that puts the total at $110. TGS does it all INCLUDING ammo for $50 yet some still want to say that going to TGS is "hardly worth it anymore"..... I just don't get that logic, sorry. The only way someone can make the point that TGS isn't "worth it" is if they have some personal reason because as I see it, they are less than half the cost of any other class and you don't have the extra work of trying to get a group together, just sign up online. I have NO connections to TGS AT ALL but insulting the price seems ridiculous. I am sure their are better instructors and other reasons someone may pay more and go elsewhere but on a strictly COST perspective...... I don't see it. Just my opinion.

Actually you can get your CFP or renewal for as little as $9.95 for ammo if you're using a .22 to qualify with at TGS. Class, Target, eyes and ears still free. Very Bare Bones Class. IMO Range qualifying was rushed.

I also have no connections to TGS, except that I do know one of their instructors. He's a great guy and I shoot with him at matches on a regular basis.

But remember that if you need a 31-state permit, like UT or FL, are you taking into account the difference in the application fees to those states? That will change the numbers, also. Kudos to you for actually running the numbers!

There is nothing wrong with going to a big "free" class. As long as you go in knowing what you will get. For many people, they have no need of personal instruction, or anything beyond the basic legally-required class in a room with a bunch of other people.

I'm glad they exist. In reality, they don't cut into businesses like mine and we don't cut into theirs. We offer significantly different services, and I would probably hate to have that many clients! They have done a lot to get the word out about these permits and to get armed citizens on the streets.

I am just being practical and looking at it on a cost basis and I keep hearing people tell me they can get better somewhere else for "around" the same money and I have yet to see that. I agree there may be many reasons to take a more personal class for a little added cost.... this I have never denied. Some of us have handled guns forever and just want the permit (shouldn't need one but thats another issue) and some need more instruction. I am glad both are available.

From strictly a cost perspective, yes the Gun Store is the Cheapest place I'm aware of. I haven't taken any of their classes so I won't go the "You get what you pay for" route. To me $80 for a lot more personal time, where I can get more information regarding laws, what happens after you shoot, etc. is worth not having to listen to some jackass ask stupid questions. Again, I haven't been in one of their classes, but have read many stories eluding to these scenarios. I always have ammo so I don't think about that as extra expense when it comes to total cost. It comes with the gig I guess. I just don't like being told I have to use their ammo. Petty maybe, but it bugs me.
If I were to go to the Gun Store (and I just might) I would qualify with .22 revolver and pistol just to cut down the added costs.
Actually I think I'll just go ahead and do that. Got nothing better going on the next couple weekends.

That is exactly what I did with my wife's SR22. Another guy in the class had a Judge. The instructor suggested he rent a 22 instead for $10 + $10 for ammo
was cheaper than the ammo for his gun.

Sounds Like the gun store is the cheapest? do we have a consensus. I mean I count ammo why not if you pay for it should be part of the total cost just like range time or food if you have to feed your instructor. Or any instruction manuals you may need to buy. sounds like there are a lot of extra's that aren't counted at some places.

Mac, can you explain your statement of "difference in application fees" please? Are you saying that the cost of the permit for Utah and Florida is different according to where you take the class? I thought the application fees where set by the state of which you are getting the permit. I may be misunderstanding you all together. I took my class at TGS and I got all the applications for Nevada, Utah and Florida all included in the $50 (was actually $25 when I took it). I then had to send money to cover the fees that were stated on the application to Florida and Utah. What application fee is different? This could be a major player in cost that I don't know about.

I'm referring to the actual application fee you will mail with your application to that state.

TGS does not certify for the UT application any more, rather than comply with the strict requirements from UT for teaching it. The UT permit is one of the cheaper ones at $51.

Now, if your class is from TGS, your 30+-state permit will have to come from FL instead, since they accept all kinds of gun classes. FL charges $112 to apply.

If all you want is your NV permit, this is a non-issue.

I don't have a FL permit because the UT one was cheaper, and covers the places I might go. This will be the case with most people who don't travel through NM. So if you can use a UT instead of a FL permit, you will save $61 in the application fees.

And I could not agree more that these permits should not be necessary. I don't care how much business I would lose. I don't do it for the money.
