Having my own full-service welding truck/shop, I have about a plate and a half of 3/16" A36 in stock, but not heat treated. I'm sure if you gave me the dimensions you needed, I will cut them for a good deal, and you won't have to worry about having extra plate laying around.

I don't do heat-treating, though, so you may be able to get it from someone else that does it all. I just wanted to throw that out there for you.

I guess my last post didnt submit properly. Great idea about the concrete backerboard! Sure wont be pretty but it would take masonry tools to get through even remotely quickly. It also wont be moving any time soon...

True, I looked into AMSEC's and the only ones I found in my price range were 12ga. It floors me that some of these safes are in the 4-5k range and they are getting away with 10ga steel. Of course, shipping isnt cheap...

Thanks MAC, I'll send you a PM. I was thinking about just torch cutting it at my shop and foregoing the heat treat. Do you have a plasma table?

Anyone look into getting a Fort Knox safe through Front Sight?

I haven't, so I don't know their prices, but the guy did say they would work with you on payments... "yeah just send in $40 a month or what you can afford and when it is paid off we will deliver" So until it is paid off in five years you still don't have a safe.

Not anymore. But I have straightedges designed for torches. If I forego my coffee, you might do okay...

Default Project status?

Did this project get finished?
I am curious as to why more people are not doing this as the Manufacturers are really skimping on the steel thickness these days. You have to spend like 2K and then you are looking at 10ga!!!!

Sundevil, I sent you a PM
