Default Shooting on Public Land?

Hello all,

I am pretty new here in the USA. I have some questions regarding shooting on public land here in Nevada. I am getting ready to head out to the desert soon, near Rachel, NV (near Area 51). There is a very nice piece of desert up there which is just perfect for shooting, there are some very good/safe backstops and is miles away from any roads and other man made structures.
I am 100% sure that this place is public land with no shooting restrictions.

The thing is that I am afraid that I get pulled over by an police officer in North Las Vegas which has very strict laws against deadly weapons in the car and all, or that I get confronted by an Cop out in the desert where I plan shoot. My guns are always unloaded and locked up in boxes when I drive around with them. It would be impossible to drive around with a gun in the car just to shoot it on public land in Austria where I come from. I guess thats why I am a afraid of getting pulled over with a gun in the care here.

My Guns, ammo and mags are always locked up in seperate boxes when I drive around in the car with them.

What are your experiences of shooting on public land in Nevada and driving on I 15 with gun through North Las Vegas?

Most of your concerns are unfounded, go out and enjoy your freedoms. You are already going way above and beyond with you putting everything in different locked boxes; that's a California thing.

Thanks for your calming words. I will try to relax when I head out there.

I don't live anywhere near NLV, but when I head out to shoot I throw some guns in trunk (loaded, no round chambered in the rifle or shotgun), strap on my holstered pistol (again, loaded), and go where I need to go. No worries. I always go to BLM land to shoot, as there are no local ranges. Closest range to me is about 45 minutes away.

As Brewer stated, go out and enjoy your freedoms. Not much to hold you back here in Nevada.

The North Las Vegas codes are also preempted by the state law so being convicted under those codes seems unlikely to me.

Nevada law requires that rifles and shotguns do not have a round chambered, and that firearms are not concealed upon your person without a permit.

However, nothing in Nevada law prohibits keeping guns anywhere within your vehicle (other than hidden on a person), nor prohibits open carrying a loaded gun.
