For an official position check the NDOW web site.

NDOW states, (a center-fire cartridge of .22 caliber or larger, must have 1000 pounds of energy at 100 yards). My Dad used to use a 22-250 for deer all the time, when I was a kid. That's the only rifle He had.

I did a quick search and found that federal has a load that uses a 60 grain Nosler Partition bullet. Using their numbers plugged into a free ballistics program I come up with over 1200 ft lbs at 100 yards and 965 at 200.

If I had a steady rest where I knew I could get a good lung shot I would use it to 200.

Never new of that factory load

I hand load ,so I'll be loading up some 70gr Speer .224 bullets. Thanks for that information.

You may have trouble stabilizing the 70gr bullet in a 22-250 unless it's a fast twist. If it is a traditional 1:12 or 1:14 you're going to need to use a 63gr Sierra SMP or a 55gr bullet.
Those twist rates just don't work with a heavier bullet.

I worked with a guy that was from Ely. He used the factory Winchester 64gr Power Point ammo. He said you had to be careful on shot placement and how far you were shooting. He stepped up to a 25-06 after shooting mine.

Fast twist

My rifle has a 8"twist .

I would use the 70gr TSX then if you are running an 1:8" twist. Then it wouldn't matter if you hit bone or not cause it would punch on through.

This is about the most unscientific way to go about it, but a box of 22-250 has a picture of a deer on the box. lol
